A common confusion among women, is understanding the difference between having Cyst and having been diagnosed with a PCOS?

“Why I haven’t my period this time???”

“How did it skip???”

“Shall I talk about this to someone???”

There many such types of questions that all come to our mind when any one of us skips her period. Either it’s a Cyst or its PCOS because of which a female can skip her period when she was so sure that her egg is not fertilized by any male sperm. Yes, that’s exactly right what you have read above. A female does not skip her period only if she is pregnant, it can also happen when she is having the problem of PCOS and Cyst.

Q. What Is Cyst And How It Cause?

Cyst: A cyst is a sac-like structure or is a closed capsule of membranous tissues that contain Air, Fluid or other substances. A Cyst can grow anywhere in our body and it can be under the skin. It varies in size. It can be like huge balls or it can be microscopic. The large cyst can also displace the internal organs. Cysts do have many types but, most of them are noncancerous or benign.

 Types Of Cyst:

 Epidermoid Cyst.

 Sebaceous Cyst.

 Breast Cyst Ganglion.

 Pilonidal Cyst.

 Ovarian Cyst.

Ovarian Cyst: Women have two ovaries located in the lower abdomen on both sides of the uterus, which plays an important role in the female reproductive system. These two ovaries of women produce hormones released during the menstrual cycle and also produces the eggs. The Ovarian Cysts are pockets or fluid-filled sacs in an ovary or on its surface. Many women develop at least one cyst during their life. In most cases, cysts are painless and cause no symptoms.

 Symptoms, Types & Causes Of Ovarian Cyst:

Symptoms: Generally, ovarian cyst does not cause any symptoms. The symptoms can only appear when the cyst grows. The symptoms of an ovarian cyst include

  1. An ache in the lower abdomen on the side of the cyst and that can be dull or severe. We can call this Pelvic Pain.
  2. Painful Bowel movements
  3. Pain In Thighs or The Lower Back
  4. Fever, Faintness Or Dizziness
  5. Rapid Breathing

 Types Of Cyst And Its Causes:

There are two types of Cysts:

  1. Follicle Cysts: When a woman is at her menstrual cycle, an egg grows in a sac (known as Follicle) which is located inside the ovaries. Usually, this sac breaks and releases an egg but if in case this sac doesn’t break the fluid inside it can form a cyst in the ovary.
  2. Corpus Luteum Cyst: In the body of a woman, Follicle Sacs breaks to release the egg. Generally, these follicle sacs get destroy after releasing an egg but in some cases, these follicle sacs don’t get destroy and the follicle gets open. During this period more than normal fluid gets inside and seals up. This storage of fluid causes the Corpus Luteum Cyst.

Q. What Is PCOS?

PCOS is generally defined as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome which is a kind of disorder in the hormonal balance of a woman. This problem occurs with many women who are of reproductive age. When a woman is having the problem of PCOS her body produces a higher number of male hormones. Due to this hormonal disbalance, she skips her menstrual periods and also gets quite difficult for her to get pregnant.

 Symptoms of PCOS:

A woman will get to know about the problem of PCOS during the time of her first menstrual period and later she gets to know because of sudden weight gain or unwanted hair growth. The common symptoms of PCOS are:

  1. Irregular Periods.
  2. Hair Growth.
  3. Heavy Bleeding.
  4. Headache.
  5. Hair Fall.

 Causes of PCOS:

If we talk about a specific reason which causes the PCOS problem in a woman then we don’t have any. But as per the doctors, it happens because of the increased level of male hormones in a woman’s body and these hormones prevent the ovaries from producing eggs. PCOS can also get cause because of the following reasons:

  1. Genetic: As per some studies PCOS can be genetic which runs in family to family.
  2. Excess Androgen: The Ovaries of a woman produce a very excess number of male Androgen hormones.
  3. Excess Insulin: As per some studies, there are up to 70% of women who are suffering from PCOS have the issue of excess insulin. Insulin is a kind of hormone which gets produced in the pancreas which allows the cells to use the proper amount of sugar from the foods for providing the energy. When this process does not happen inside the body of a woman and the pancreas kept generating more insulin. Due to this excess amount of insulin the ovaries produce more male hormones.
  4. Low-Grade Inflammation: A woman who is suffering from PCOS has low-grade inflammation in her body due to which her ovaries produce a high level of male hormones (Androgen).

“ Inflammation is a kind of term which is used to define the ‘White Blood Cells’ which protects our body against infections. “
